It all begins here.

There is a beginning to every journey, a starting point to everything in life. This is mine:
I was born in the city of Tegucigalpa, Honduras, known to all who love her as Tegus ... for some reason Tegus is a girl. I often refer to her as "mi Tegus linda " , Spanish for " my pretty Tegus ".

It is interesting how the place one  calls home imprints so many different traits and colors in our life and personality: unpredictable, fun, a bit chaotic at times, happy-go-lucky...

If I were to describe to you Tegus, I would probably start describing the mountains that surround her , and the hills that are widespread throughtout the whole city. The green and blue tints of the mountains can be seen from any point where you are located in the city. The mountainous terrain , tied to its past as a colonial spanish town , has made urban planning quite a challenge, but from my point of view, this is precisely what adds personality to the city. The winding roads that go up and down are especially  beautiful at night , when the whole city starts to light up , reminding me of a Nativity Scene.

Tegus is noisy, busy , a bit disorganized , but I would say overall a happy town. In the past years it has also seen a wave of urbanistic growth, as new apartment and office buildings , together with hotels and shopping malls are being built around the city.
As the capital of Honduras, Tegus is also the seat of the government.
And this is the town I call home, the place where my travels begin, and the place I return to , to charge batteries and to start anticipating my next journey.
While at Tegus, I enjoy driving to El Hatillo ( from where this picture was taken) where you can see the Cristo del Picacho or eat at one of the Restaurants in the mountain where you can enjoy the beautiful view of the city.  There are also several towns around the city that you can visit for day trips .  You have to visit Tegus, right in the heart  of the Americas. It's a city that doesn't steal your heart at first sight, but that slowly grows on you as you discover its hidden treasures of colonial paths, rising entertainment and restaurant scenes, its beautiful weather and friendly people.
We all need a starting point , to remind us how far we have been able to come, to fly , how much we have learned.  But we also need a starting point that serves as a base , as an anchor, as place of all that is familiar, to be able to process the beauty of new things discovered.
This is Tegus.

Write to me if you would like travel tips for Tegus: Hotels , Restaurants , things to do, or for general info on Honduras.
